Family Responses to Bias-Based Bullying & Discrimination in School Settings
Bias directed to our LGBTQ+ students is becoming more frequent and severe in school communities across the country. The current social and political climate in the United States, Canada and the UK continues to create unique challenges for our queer, transgender, nonbinary and gender-expansive students. It can be difficult to know how to respond when your child is being made to feel unsafe at school because of their identities. Join us on February 22nd, 2025 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm CST.
This 90-minute-interactive session will help equip parents/caregivers to advocate for the school climates their LGBTQ+ kids deserve.
Topics will include best practices regarding:
❖ documentation practices during the bullying investigation process and tips for clearly communicating with school administrators
❖ sample restorative actions that can repair harm caused by LGBTQ+ discrimination at school
❖ proactive interventions and indicators of LGBTQ+ affirming and celebratory school climates
❖ sample responses to challenging questions to communicate to school staff when navigating community pushback/controversy
Training will be conducted via zoom and the link for the event will be emailed the day before the session on Feb. 21st, 2025.
About the Facilitator:
Dave Edwards (he/him) is the founder of Gender Inclusive Schools and a career educator. He has provided hundreds of professional development sessions to 125+ school communities across the United States and Canada. As queer person and parent of a transgender child, Dave has been forced to navigate discrimination against his child at school on many separate occasions. While this session will not provide legal advice, Dave will share his own families experiences with bullying investigations, humans rights charges at the city and state levels, and advocating for systems-level changes in both large and small school communities. He is also the offer of the book Gender Inclusive Schools: How to Affirm and Support Gender-Expansive Students.
Registration is $40. Reach out to dave.edwards@genderinclusiveschools.org with questions or if you need low-cost or no-cost registration options!
*Can't attend our session but want to bring a group training to your school community? Send an inquiry to info@genderinclusiveschools.org.
